Cette forme, bien que verbale,  fonctionne plutôt comme un nom que comme un verbe.

Il renvoie à une activité:

ex: I like playing tennis. I enjoy reading books.

EMPLOIS:

- après les verbes:LIKE-DISLIKE-PREFER-LOVE-HATE

lorsqu’ils indiquent une appréciation.

ex: I love listening to music. I hate skiing.

- toujours après  le verbe ENJOY. ex: I enjoy playing cards.

- après les verbes exprimant le début, la continuation ou la fin d’une action.(stop, go on....)

ex: you should stop smoking .

 

- après certaines expressions: I CAN’T STAND - I CAN’T HELP-

ex: I can’t stand listening to him.

ATTENTION!!! Les verbes suivants sont toujours suivis de TO + VERBE, jamais de gérondif!

ex = want - hope - need - expect -promise - decide - try - forget - learn - offer - refuse - tell -...

       ex: I want to go to the party.  I expect you to learn your lessons
